Project #4 Exquisite corpse

Description

Exquisite corpse is a surrealist technique where players take turns to draw a portion of a figure while not being able to see what has already been drawn by other players. The drawing gets revealed at the end, which tends to create surprising and unexpected forms and narratives. My partners are Manuela and Taanvi.

Design Process

An cute brown otter A sunflower head with leaf legs A robot boy

This is my character, it’s an otter named Nork, he eats fish and plays in water all day. He has multiple brothers and sisters who play with seaweed. He lives in Alaska, and is 4months old. He has thick fur that makes him float on water.

This flower is Taanvi's character. The flower started it’s journey at my moms house as just a seed. We cared for it and arew it for months in the summer. Everyday, the flower used to talk to her friends around her and they would spend hours looking at the sun. Eventually, with the seasons changing, we could see that she was losing it’s life. So my younger sister put a light bulb in a transparent ball and kept it near the flower saying that nothing will happen to it, cause it’s still summer for the flower. Even though the flower barely had any energy, it smiled for the wonderful life it had.

This robot is Manuela's character. It is actually an 8-year-old boy named Thor with a robot costume on. He loves sci-fi movies and his favorite holiday is Halloween. He almost never takes his robot costume off, just in case aliens land in space and greet him as a friend.

My new corpse is a future robot, Nork that has plant stem legs as its sustainably designed. It is waterproof so it can play in water and uses its stem legs to move around. This robot is used for message and package delivery across water bodies. They are the major carriers as due to global warming majority of landmasses have submerged in water.

Reflection

This project made me think a lot about creating characters and how having a backstory to them gives them a emotional angle, makes us attached to them. As I had to use only one oart of my sketch, losing the two parts was making me sad. at first making the flower body seemed complicated to get right but as I started coding it formed without much tension, it was maths and fine tweaking of pixels though. I did have a hard time filling the colors in for Nork. In this sketch I used function scale() for the first time and used it to mirror the eyes. I liked structuring the whole character across the canvas. I kept thiking about the function/movement of it. But found that my initial idea of making it swim was a little far-fetched. So now it only does a few moves. I also realised that background adds a story to any sketch so that also needs to be designed mindfully. This assignment makes me think about how restrictive p5.js is, because everything is coordinated to specific pixels. I can't give parametersof the arms to create the triangles easily, I need to give exact pixels of corners of triangle.
